武道の四つの原則 | The Four Elements of Martial Arts
The four essential elements of martial arts, which also apply to Karate, are as follows:
目 (視力) | Eyes (Vision):
Keep your eyes focused on your opponent while carefully observing their movements. Instantly analyze the surroundings such as location (indoor or outdoor), weather, terrain, and other environmental factors. The first step to success is positioning yourself advantageously before engaging your opponent.
Establish mental dominance by looking into your opponent’s eyes; however, do not limit your focus only to the eyes. Maintain awareness of the opponent’s entire body movement through peripheral vision. During practice of Kihon (basics) and Kata, keep your gaze straight ahead at eye level while maintaining peripheral awareness. Never look down unnecessarily, as it reduces awareness and makes you vulnerable. Only look down when required for specific techniques.
心 (精神) | Mind (Spirit, Courage):
The strength of the mind builds a powerful spirit and provides the courage to face any situation. A martial artist must remain emotionally balanced—neither overly excited nor discouraged—and maintain calmness under pressure. A composed and controlled mind allows you to act decisively and take your opponent by surprise.
足捌き | Footwork (Legs):
Efficient movement requires balance, flexibility, and speed. Proper footwork is essential for both attack and defense. Maintain a low and stable center of gravity. Avoid staying in one position for too long—constant movement and repositioning are key. Do not drag your feet, as it reduces speed, and avoid excessive jumping, which can leave you vulnerable.
強 (筋力) | Strength (Muscles):
Physical conditioning and muscular strength are necessary to generate effective power. Muscles must be trained for endurance, stamina, and explosive action. Consistent training develops the ability to execute techniques with speed, precision, and power.
All of the above are vital elements of martial arts that can be developed through disciplined and regular practice.
